mate display manager doesn't work [Solved]

Postby 5au1 » Wed Apr 04, 2012 9:52 pm

Hi,

Looking at the wiki http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/session it says that mate comes with a display manger, however when I installed (in Debian wheezy) as the only desktop environment I still get a login prompt. I installed slim as well as gdm3 and both work well, however I would like to use mate's own DM.

Just in case this is my source.list file:
Code: Select all
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 CD Binary-1 20120206-04:56]/ wheezy main
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 CD Binary-1 20120313-15:44]/ wheezy main

#Debian Testing
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free

#Actualizaciones de seguridad (Security updates)
deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

#Multimedia testing

#Mate Desktop environment (Fork of gnome2)
# deb http://tridex.net/repo/debian/ wheezy main
deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/debian wheezy main

Thanks in advance,

Saúl

Yeah 5au1, many of us have experienced this. Unfortunately, MATE does NOT have it's own DM just yet. It is forthcoming. I'm sure this misinformation is accidental. In the mean time, I and others are having alot of luck with LightDM. It seems to have the same development goals as MATE, light, fast, easy on resources, configurable & functional. Give it a Test Drive.

Thanks for the quick answer, gmagar. Now I'm more confident that I haven't done anything wrong while installing, however there is a little problem that I don't know if it's related to the display manager; at the moment I'm with gdm3 (without the recommended packages) and sometimes after the login screen I end up with a cursor and a black screen, a problem that persists even after rebooting the machine one or even two times. Does something similar happened with lightdm?

In any case I'm going to give it a try and see how it works.

Cheers

Is lightdm able to switch users on screen-lock? I am using
gdm3, and this is not working. So I am guessing this is
dm-related?

The user switch issue with gdm3 is solved in mate-screensaver 1.2.0-3 (uploaded today on repo)
