I just installed MATE today and I am VERY happy and excited. I too was having trouble adjusting to LXDE and Gnome3 is an absolute disaster. I've been keeping all my desktops at FC14 and running FC16 in a VmWare Player instance, just waiting to either get used to a new desktop or... find a working port of Gnome2... and here it is!
Just an FYI, I got the following errors when installing MATE on a FC16 installation that also contained Gnome3:

After uninstalling the conflicting packages (along with their dependencies), everything installed smoothly and started right up.

So Happy for the Fine Mate developers and the Fedora packagers who put together Mate which I installed on my computer...after installing Mate on a friend's computer who upgraded to Mint 12 and found Gnome 3 to basically suck for him...I had been following the Mintcast and heard about mate which worked good on old hardware. I installed Mate and it worked well on his computer and he was very happy with it. I thought to myself, I wonder if Fedora has a Mate as well and so I googled it and found out there was....easy command line install later and voila...marvelously engineered desktop....superior to the XFCE and LXDE desktops which I was using.( Gnome 3 in fallback mode just was not that great for my old computer. All works well and very snappy...snappier than the XFCE and LXDE desktops. THANKS...not one problem at all has been encountered...seems to work better than Gnome 2 used to.
