White text with Menta theme after update

Postby juliom » Fri Jul 05, 2013 10:18 am

Hello all. After today's update, some text is displayed in white when using the Menta theme. The funny thing is, black is selected as the text color. If you choose any other theme then everything is as it's supposed to be.

It only happens with some programs, like the disk manager in the screenshot. Also happens in Remmina at the preferences window.

Using Debian Wheezy. Could it be a bug? Happened at my home and work pc.

Thanks a lot.

Can give us a list which packages are updated?
And was mate-themes updated too?
Which version of gome-disk-manager and Remmina are running?
Which GTK3 version is running?
Sorry, for asking but MATE is avaible for more than one distro ;)

My gtk3 version is 3.4.2-6, gnome-disk-utility is 3.0.2-3 and remmina is 1.0.0-4+deb7u1. I mentioned disk utility and remmina but it also happen with the software update preferences. Everything was fine until the update.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Ok, i know what's going wrong.
gnome-disk-utility is 3.0.2-3 and remmina is 1.0.0-4+deb7u1 are GTK3 applications and expected gtk3-4.x .
But current Menta is optimized for GTK3-8 because current GTK3 upstream version is 3.8 and some distros using 3.8.
Here we several probs.
-- your distro is too old and too conservative. :)
-- every little change in GTK3 breaks a theme and driving theme artist crazy.
-- every theme needs to be optimized for 4 GTK3 versions, (GTK3-2/-4/-6/-8)

This is imposible to do for mate-themes, because the result is to provide 4 several mate-themes packages.
Sorry, i suggest to downgrade to mate-themes-1.6.0, here Menta is opimized for GTK3-6 but it seems to work also with GTK3-4 as you said.
But i did a lot of other fixes and improvements for 1.6.1.

At my githup repo i've created 4 mate-themes-extra package for every GTK3 version.

Hope this will explain the issue and help you a bit.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, at least now I understand the issue.

Yeah, Debian can be a bit TOO conservative, but we're just now starting to test Linux deployment to replace Windows in our company and Debian's stability is what we need. I'm sorry for what I'm about to ask, I'm still a bit green, but... how do I downgrade themes to 1.6.0? :D

Thank you!

Nevermind, I found the 1.6.0-2 package on the internet and manually installed it, the problem goes away. Will you update the 1.6.1 package to correct Menta?

Thanks a lot for the hard work!

The only way to solve the GTK3 dilemma is to provide several theme packages for different GTK3 versions.
I will start a discussion about this with the other devs, ..........most of them use debian.
It would be helpful if you can open a issue report at https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-themes .

MATE will be official in jessie, and it will be with gtk 3.8+... so I believe we can avoid to support gtk 3.4

This begs the question "what about other distros like Fedora and/or Ubuntu that release every 6 months or so?"
